MUAFS Internship Pathways Panel
On May 7, MUAFS hosted an engaging and insightful Internships Panel, drawing students eager to learn what it truly takes to break into the world of finance. The evening featured a diverse group of student speakers who had interned across some of the most competitive sectors, including investment banking, the Big 4 banks, investment management, and fintech. What made the event stand out was the panelists’ honesty and relatability. They shared not just their successes, but also the behind-the-scenes moments. Their stories emphasised that setbacks are part of the process and that resilience is key. A major theme throughout the evening was the importance of starting early and staying consistent. The panelists encouraged attendees to begin building their CVs and networks as soon as possible, even if it feels premature. Another powerful message was the value of authenticity; tailoring applications and owning your unique background can set you apart. Confidence, isn’t something you’re born with; it’s built over time, often by simply choosing to apply even when you’re unsure. The speakers also reminded students to make the most of the communities around them. Societies like MUAFS offer more than just events - they're valuable resources for mentorship, connection, and growth. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our incredible speakers for their openness and insight, and to everyone who attended and contributed to the vibrant energy in the room.
AFS x HUB24 Office Tour
On April 30, a group of curious and enthusiastic attendees got an inside look at HUB24’s dynamic workplace during an exclusive office tour at their sleek, modern headquarters. The event offered a unique chance to see where innovation and fintech come together at one of Australia’s top wealth management platforms.
Guests were welcomed with light refreshments before setting off on a guided tour of the office, taking in the collaborative spaces and tech-driven atmosphere that define HUB24’s working style. Along the way, team members from across the business from software developers to client service professionals shared what it’s really like to be part of such a fast-moving, forward-thinking company.
Lively Q&A sessions gave attendees the chance to dig deeper into HUB24’s mission to support advisers and investors, and how different teams contribute to that goal. One of the standout themes was the company’s strong focus on culture, learning, and career growth.
Whether guests came in curious about fintech or seriously considering a future in the industry, the event provided valuable insights and left everyone with a clearer sense of HUB24’s values, impact, and the opportunities available. It was an inspiring afternoon that sparked plenty of conversations and new connections.

The event’s purpose was to provide members with a clear headshot to showcase on their LinkedIn profiles, and to help them understand the benefits of using LinkedIn to showcase their brand when applying for positions in the industry.

Last Monday evening the Macquarie University Applied Finance Society held its third event for the year – Investing in a Better Future with our sponsor, UniSuper. This event’s purpose was to give members a clear understanding of the considerations of a superannuation fund when planning for their members' retirement when not all members are the same and have different goals, as well as to understand the concept of sustainable investing and why it is gaining traction.

The Macquarie University Applied Finance Society held its second event for the year – Empowering Possibilities: An Evening with CFA Society Sydney. The event’s purpose was to give attendees a comprehensive understanding of what the CFA Charter is, what the program structure is, and to understand its usefulness in pursuing a career in the investment management profession.
MUBAC x AFS - Python Workshop Series
Throughout March the Macquarie University Business Analytics Club and the Macquarie University Applied Finance Society collaborated to facilitate a Python Workshop series led by Business Analytics tutor Tuo Kai. The Python Workshop series was split into three levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced workshops – aiming to give attendees a basic understanding of Python’s functions before continuing to the more advanced applications of Python.

Last Tuesday evening the Applied Finance Society hosted its first event for 2024, The AFS Social, which aimed to introduce our newest members to our executive team, and to provide the opportunity to meet members of the Applied Finance and Economics departments who convene and/or teach first-year and second-year units within the Bachelor of Applied Finance degree.

The Applied Finance Society ran its event ‘The R Revolution with Michael Garcia’, which explored how the R software suite is being implemented in the business world. This event was run by Michael Garcia, who is a Lead Analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Meet the Practitioners Evening
The Macquarie University Applied Finance Society held its Meet the Practitioners event in the Financial Decisions Lab on Macquarie University campus. This event served to educate AFS members about the work that Macquarie Business School academics undertake in their fields outside of the classroom.

The AFS collaborated with the Macquarie University Economics Society (MUES) to put together the Meet the Experts evening, which featured two panels: one on Economics (Macroeconomics and Policy Applications) and one on Finance (Economic Data and Industry Decision Making).

The Applied Finance Society ran its first-ever LinkedIn Photoshoot Evening, where AFS members were able to take professional headshots in the Finance Decision Lab (FDL), as well as learning how to curate their LinkedIn profiles and resumes to increase their chances of landing their desired positions.
